		<description>Anna Phaenarete Liokalioka.anna@gmail.com

Anna Phaenarete Lioka is a Berlin-based artist from Thessaloniki, Greece. Working across sound installation, moving image, sculpture, performance, and computational media, her practice explores relationships between human and more-than-human worlds through listening, material transformation, and speculative narratives.

Her artistic research investigates how memory is inscribed across bodies, landscapes, and matter,
bringing together geological, biological, and technological forms of temporality.

Through archives, field recordings, machine learning, and spatial sound, she creates installations that examine how processes of transformation shape perception, history, and forms of coexistence.

She is currently a Spatial Audio Specialist at Transmoderna and co-founder of the collectives Odd Sonorous and Xώma.

Sediment I&#38;nbsp;
investigates how geological processes function as forms of memory, and how listening can reveal the temporal layers embedded within matter.&#38;nbsp;Conceived as a sculptural body carrying sound within it, the work approaches sediment not as a passive record of the past, but as an active process through which landscapes, histories, and bodies continually transform one another.

Drawing on the buried course of the Ilissos River and the myth of Oreithyia, the sculpture reflects on the traces left by ecological and cultural erasure. Rather than presenting memory as something fixed, it proposes sedimentation as an ongoing accumulation of material, sonic, and historical layers that continue to shape the present.

By embedding sound within cast iron, Sediment I invites listening as a way of encountering what persists beneath the visible surface,
where geological matter becomes both archive and an active process of memory.

Ode to Sorikkot is a spoken-word performance that constructs the speculative mythology surrounding S. Abligua × Odekon, tracing the fictional sonic plant’s origin from the geological formation of the Earth to the transformation of a primordial woman into the flower.

Drawing upon Greek and Korean mythologies, ecological narratives, and speculative storytelling, the work imagines a woman whose voice sustains the growth of the forest. Rather than treating sound as communication alone, the performance approaches resonance as a material and relational force that shapes connections between bodies, landscapes, and more-than-human life.

When humans seek to exploit her sonic capacities for their own benefit, her human form is destroyed. Yet death does not signify disappearance. The soil receives her body and transforms it into&#38;nbsp;S. Abligua × Odekon, whose resonance continues to nurture the forest, its animals, and those willing to listen with care and respect.

Through myth-making as an artistic research methodology, Ode to Sorikkot asks how speculative cosmologies can challenge extractive relationships with nature and propose listening as a practice of reciprocity rather than possession.

WET NEW KERRTZEN is a six-channel sound installation that explores voice, language, and belonging through an invented linguistic score. Developed from fourteen letters found on a discarded red MDF board and rearranged into the nonsensical phrase WET NEW KERRTZZEN, the work uses this invented fragment as a graphic score for six voices.

As the phrase circulates between speakers from different linguistic backgrounds, pronunciation becomes a process of translation, misunderstanding, and adaptation. Rather than treating language as a stable system of meaning, the installation foregrounds the materiality of voice, where rhythm, accent, hesitation, and repetition shape communication beyond semantic understanding.

Through the continuous negotiation between written signs and spoken sound, WET NEW KERRTZEN examines how language can simultaneously construct and unsettle ideas of identity, belonging, and otherness. The work proposes voice as a space where difference is not resolved but continuously performed, revealing communication as an embodied, relational, and continually negotiated process.

Lithochronometry&#124; 2023

Three-part installation comprising Being, Written in Stone (eight-channel sound installation),
Lithochronometry (six-channel audiovisual installation), and Archive.

Presented at SoundS Master ExhibitCollegium Hungaricum BerlinBerlin, Germany

A thesis project investigating memory, geological time, and the entangled relations between human, machine, and more-than-human worlds.

Lithochronometry is a three-part installation comprising Being, Written in Stone, Lithochronometry, and Archive. Through sculpture, multichannel sound, moving image, and collected geological materials, the project explores how memory extends beyond the human body and becomes embedded in stone, landscape, and technological systems.

Rather than approaching stone as an inert object, the installation considers it an active participant in processes of remembering, transformation, and geological time. Drawing on field recordings from abandoned quarries, machine learning, speculative writing, and sculptural practice, the work proposes memory as a material process shared across human and more-than-human worlds. Human voices, geological formations, and computational systems become interconnected through acts of translation and transformation.

The central installation presents a six-channel audiovisual environment inside a circular YTONG sculpture whose porous material absorbs sound and shapes the acoustic space. Rather than representing geological time, the work invites visitors to experience it through listening, spatial resonance, and moving image. Across the triptych, stones function simultaneously as material, archive, and witness, proposing new ways of thinking about memory, coexistence, and the temporalities that connect human and non-human life.

Keywords: audio sculptures,&#38;nbsp; AV sculpture, clay, stones, memory,&#38;nbsp; artificial intelligence, human non-human relations, archive.

Being, written in stone

Being, Written in Stone is an eight-channel sound installation created in collaboration with Leandros Marios Basteas as part of the collective Xώma. Eight clay sculptures, each enclosing a loudspeaker, are shaped from memories of stones encountered during field research, creating a spatial composition in which every sculpture maintains its own sonic presence while contributing to a shared acoustic environment.

The voices emitted by the sculptures are transformed into stone-like resonances through machine learning trained on field recordings from abandoned quarries. Clay becomes both a metaphor for the human body and a material through which human memory, geological matter, and machine memory enter into dialogue, questioning where memory resides and how it might be shared across different forms of existence.

	Lithochronometry

Lithochronometry is a six-channel audiovisual installation presented inside a circular YTONG sculpture. The title combines the Greek word lithos (stone) with geochronometry, shifting the measurement of geological time toward an exploration of stone as a bearer of memory rather than a passive record.

Field recordings from active and abandoned quarries are combined with AI-generated moving images trained on thousands of photographs of quarry landscapes. Spatial sound circulates through the sculptural structure while projected images continuously transform the geological surface, bringing together human intervention, machine memory, and deep time. The installation proposes listening as a way of encountering geological processes that unfold beyond the scale of human perception.

	Archive

Archive assembles stones collected during fieldwork alongside printed images generated throughout the machine learning process. Rather than documenting the project, the archive becomes part of the installation itself, tracing the encounters, journeys, and transformations that shaped its development.

Each stone carries its own history while each image records a different stage in the computational interpretation of geological surfaces. Together they form a material archive in which personal memory, field research, and machine vision coexist, revealing the artistic process as an accumulation of relations rather than a linear record.

S. Abligua × Odekon is a four-channel audiovisual and archival installation that investigates how speculative fiction,
fictional archives, and listening can function as methods for reimagining relationships between humans and more-than-human worlds.

Presented as a pseudo-documentary, the installation follows the fictional rediscovery of an extinct sonic plant whose existence survives through fragmented botanical records, AI-generated imagery, and speculative scientific documentation. Rather than treating archives as repositories of objective knowledge, the work constructs an unstable system in which myth, scientific authority, and imagination continuously overlap.

The fictional universe was later expanded through

Ode to Sorikkot,, which constructs the plant’s mythological origin. While the performance unfolds through cosmology and myth, S. Abligua × Odekon takes the form of an investigation,
asking whether extinction signifies the disappearance of a species or the loss of humanity's capacity to listen.

By deliberately blurring distinctions between plant, human, animal, and landscape, the work proposes listening as an ethical and relational mode of knowing that resists extractive understandings of nature.

Subterrestrial Noise is an eight-channel audiovisual installation that investigates how listening can reveal the hidden temporalities, agencies, and material processes of the Earth's subsurface. Combining geophone field recordings, synthetic sound, AI-generated imagery, and speculative narratives, the work invites audiences into an underground world where human and more-than-human presences become entangled.

Drawing on chthonic mythologies, ecological thought, and recordings of anthropogenic vibrations beneath Berlin, the installation approaches the underground not as a passive resource to be extracted, but as a living environment shaped by transformation, memory, and interdependence. The subterranean soundscape intertwines geological processes with traces of human activity, blurring distinctions between natural and constructed environments.

Through immersive spatial sound and projected imagery, Subterrestrial Noise proposes listening as a means of engaging with the Earth's hidden agencies. Rather than a passive geological layer, the subsurface is understood as an active space shaped by intertwined temporalities, material processes, and more-than-human relations.

		<description>Interwined Dialect &#124; 2021

Sound installation, three speakers, twig nest, variable dimensions
Presented as part of Climate Care: The Rewilding Years
Floating University BerlinBerlin, Germany, 5 September 2021

Intertwined Dialect&#38;nbsp; is a site-responsive sound installation created by Odd Sonorous (Anna Phaenarete Lioka and Hyewon Suk). Situated within the ecological landscape of Floating University Berlin, the work explores possibilities for communication across species through listening, voice transformation, and machine learning.

Using voice-conversion technology, human voices are transformed into hybrid vocal forms inspired by bird calls, including those of endangered and extinct species. These synthetic voices are returned to the site through speakers embedded within nests constructed from branches and vegetation, becoming part of the surrounding acoustic environment.

Rather than imitating nature, Intertwined Dialect proposes a speculative dialogue between human and more-than-human beings. By treating voice as a shared ecological material, the installation imagines communication as a practice of coexistence, translation, and reciprocity rather than mastery.

Re-textualized Ambiances is an audiovisual installation developed from archival film and sound recordings sourced from the Cimatheque – Alternative Film Centre in Cairo and the Syros Sound Meetings archive. Through audiovisual reconstruction, the work investigates how archival materials can be transformed into new spatial and sensory experiences rather than preserved as static historical documents.

By fragmenting, layering, and recontextualizing image and sound, the installation constructs an abstract environment
