Interwined Dialect | 2021

Sound installation, three speakers, twig nest, variable dimensions

Intertwined Dialect  is a site-responsive sound installation created by Odd Sonorous (Anna Phaenarete Lioka and Hyewon Suk). Situated within the ecological landscape of Floating University Berlin, the work explores possibilities for communication across species through listening, voice transformation, and machine learning.

Using voice-conversion technology, human voices are transformed into hybrid vocal forms inspired by bird calls, including those of endangered and extinct species. These synthetic voices are returned to the site through speakers embedded within nests constructed from branches and vegetation, becoming part of the surrounding acoustic environment.

Rather than imitating nature, Intertwined Dialect proposes a speculative dialogue between human and more-than-human beings. By treating voice as a shared ecological material, the installation imagines communication as a practice of coexistence, translation, and reciprocity rather than mastery.
